Nizam Lohar the story of a mujahid (spy) who conspired against the British Empire
The war of independence was near in subcontinent, the
British were consolidating their roots in Punjab. A major resistance
movement was needed to stop the British from advancing further. Nizam Lohar was
born in 1835 A.D. in a Muslim family at Tan Taran Amritsar district of Punjab.
Nizam was a poor and human-friendly patriot. The oppression of the poor and
wrecked people by the British administration was fuelling the spirit of revenge
in the minds of the Nizam. He launched a secret movement against the oppressive
and tyrannical government. In the beginning, they continued to practice petty
secrets activities against the occupation. The Brtish administration was skeptical of the Nizam, but
due to a lack of solid evidence, they refrained from acting against him. The movement gained momentum when British police raided Nizam's house one evening.
The Nizam was not at home. Many weapons and ammunition were recovered from his house. A British officer
raped his sister. Nizam's mother succumbed to her distress. When Nizam found
out about the incident, he immediately married his sister to one of his friends named Shafi.
The next night, the Nizam attacked at the police station.
The attack was so severe that several British policemen, including the police
officer (who had raped Nizam's sister) and another SSP, were left dead. The
news spread like wildfire throughout Amritsar. Children, men, and women were
talking about the bravery and courage of the Nizam. Everyone generously paid
tribute to the work of the Nizam. It was decided all over Amritsar that whoever
informed about the activity of Nizam, his house would be set on fire and his
land would be seized. After this operation, the Nizam succeeded in imposing
itself on the British administration.
A few days later, the Nizam attacked another military
barrack and released many prisoners. Leading among the released prisoners was
one of his close friends Suja Singh. After that, the two friends started taking
many major actions against the British army. The movement gained more momentum
when a young named Jabro Jutt from Kasur joined it. The name of this movement was
changed to Chaddo Punjab (Leave Punjab) Movement. Thousands of youth from all
over Punjab joined this movement and together they fought against British
imperialism with full zeal and zest. As a result, several hundred British soldiers
were killed, and the looted wealth was distributed among the poor and needy
peoples.
This movement was becoming a constant headache for the
British administration, they hatched many conspiracies to crush the movement. When no
conspiracy worked, a beautiful prostitute woman was brought into the field as a
tool. This woman managed to trap Suja Singh in her trap. As Suja was sinking
into the swamp of this woman's love, he was becoming oblivious to his duty.
Apart from the responsibility of the movement, he was also unable to help his
mother. When Nizam found out about him, he immediately went to her house to find
out about her mother. There Nizam came to know about Suja's negligence and his love
game, he immediately called Suja and scolded and reprimanded him in front of
his girlfriend. His girlfriend, seizing the opportunity, provoked Suja to
inform about Nizam to the police. Suja knew that Nizam used to come to her mother's
house every week to take care of her. One day, when Nizam came to Suja mother's
house to visit her, suja informed the British administration through his
girlfriend. The British army surrounded the Nizam in the same house. Nizam
fought with the British army for forty-eight hours. Eventually, Nizam was about
to escape by dodging the enemy army when his speeding horse fell into a ravine.
Nizam's head hit a nearby iron tree trunk and he fainted, British soldiers
pierced his body with their guns. Thus, this fearless Mujahid, a man of courage
and bravery, surrendered his life to Almighty Allah.
The British army captured and imprisoned Suja. When Suja's mother heard that Suja was the cause of Nizam's martyrdom, she went to the prison to meet her son and snatched a sword from a soldier there and beheaded her son (Suja). Thus, Suja came to an end. Nizam's body was handed over to his devotees. Funeral prayers were announced. The British administration allocated a tax of Rs 2 per person for attending the funeral, yet a crowd of the devotees and loved ones attended the funeral. At that time, a huge amount of Rs. 73,000 was collected for attending his funeral. Nizam Lohar was a brave Muslim soldier who left an example of his courage in the world.
